Glossary
The few words in Tentmaker that are not everyday English, in plain language. They are in alphabetical order.
- Accent color: The second color of your site, used on buttons and on the top edge of cards. See Settings and branding.
- Alt text: See Description.
- Block: One piece of a page, such as a paragraph, a picture or a button. A page is a stack of blocks. See Blocks.
- Caption (picture): Words shown under a picture.
- Captions (video): The words spoken in a video, shown as text. A page with a hosted video needs them. See Media.
- Checklist: The list in the page editor of what must be fixed before a page can go live.
- CSS: A language that describes how a web page looks. Only needed on the Custom CSS screen.
- Custom domain: Your church's own web address, such as site.yourchurch.org, used instead of the Tentmaker one. See Domain.
- Description (of a picture): A few words that say what is in a picture. People who cannot see it hear these words read aloud. Also called alt text.
- DNS: The phone book of the internet. It tells browsers where your web address lives. You change it at the company where you bought your domain.
- Draft: Your working copy of something. Visitors do not see it until you publish.
- Dropdown: A menu item that opens a list of more items when someone points at it. See The menu.
- Editor, Manager, Owner: The three roles on a church's team. See Members and roles.
- Embed: Another website's content, such as a video, map or giving form, shown inside your page. See Custom CSS and embeds.
- EXIF: Hidden details in a photo: where and when it was taken, and with what. Tentmaker removes them when you upload. See Media.
- Hosted video: A video you upload to Tentmaker and play on your own page, as opposed to a link to YouTube.
- Layout: How wide a page is and whether it has a sidebar: Wide, Narrow, Sidebar left or Sidebar right.
- Library: All the pictures and videos you have uploaded.
- Live: What visitors see right now.
- Module: An optional part of your site that can be turned on or off, such as Missionaries. See Modules.
- Page starter: A set of blocks to begin a page from, with sample words to replace. Once you have the page, nothing links it back.

- Preview: A look at something before it is live.
- Publish: Make a draft live so visitors see it.
- Redirect: A rule that sends visitors from an old address to a new one. See Redirects.
- Restore: Make an old version your working copy again. It is not live until you publish it.
- Safe mode: A one-click switch on Custom CSS that turns the custom CSS off for visitors, without deleting it.
- Shared block: A block written once and used on many pages. Change it, and every page that uses it changes.
- Sidebar: A narrow column beside the main words of a page. The site-wide sidebar is the same on every page that uses it. See The site-wide sidebar.
- Template: The look of your whole site, as a ready-made package: fonts, shapes and, if you choose, a menu, sidebar and footer. See Templates.
- Timezone: The clock your church uses. It decides when an event is over.
- Unpublish: Take a page or post off the site. Its history is kept.
- Version: One saved copy of a page, a shared block, the menu, the sidebar or custom CSS. Every save keeps one.
